Exchange and Incoming†
Graduate level†
- Currently, I cannot afford having new students due to our serious capacity problem, except for some special cases such as the official double-degree program.
- I apologize for that I cannot even reply to such a request, since I regularly receive too many e-mails on such requests.
Undergraduate level†
- I cannot host any exchange students at undergraduate level (e.g., summer internship) due to our capacity problem.
- I apologize for that I cannot even reply to such a request, since I regularly receive too many e-mails on such requests.
Some more details on how serious our capacity problem is†
- We have 50 m^2 space for the office, while we are more than 20 people including me (Fukagata).
- The average area per person is less than 2.5 m^2/person (including the common space such as corridors and a meeting table), which is only 1/4 of the standard in Japan (i.e., 10 m^2/person).
- Of course, not all of this 50 m^2 can be used as the space for the desks and chairs because we also need corridors, a meeting table, etc.
- Excluding the common space, the average area per person is less than 1.9 m^2/person.
- Therefore, I (Koji Fukagata, a full professor) haven't been able to have a personal office for already 18 years - I've been sitting among my students.
- Also, not all the students can sit, even if the space we can allocate for one student is 70 cm in width.
- In our department or faculty either, there is no space left that we can rent.
- I have to supervise more than 20 thesis students alone
- Since every faculty member needs to be an independent PI in our department (because the total number of students is huge), I do not have associate/assistant professors in our group to help me, unlike major national universities.
- I can start thinking about accepting external students when the number of my students becomes below 10.
